EXTRACTION - HOME CARE
The site may be sore for a day or so. If we have prescribed an RX for pain or an antibiotic, please take as directed and use all of the antibiotic. If you feel the pain is abnormal, please call the office right away at 729-6961. Keep your head elevated. Swelling can be controlled by ice packs applied for 15 minutes every hour at most. For bleeding, use gauze pads pressed gently over the area. A blot clot is normal and will begin to form within ah hour after the procedure. Try not to dislodge it by chewing food on it, brushing it, rinsing it away or by drinking through a straw.
TEMPORARY CROWN - HOME CARE
You have a temporary crown in your mouth. Be careful about what you eat and chew. The restoration has been placed with temporary bonding material to last the few days until the permanent crown is cemented. This means that the temporary may come off or loosen if not properly cared for. Please avoid biting into hard or chewy foods. Brush and floss very gently including sliding the floss out to the side to avoid dislodging the restoration. We will call to schedule your crown placement as soon as we receive it back from the lab in approximately 3 weeks.
FINAL CROWN - HOME CARE
With the fitting and placement of the final crown restoration, oral function is back up to speed and bite should be improved. Because this type of crown lasts a long time, it will help sustain the health of neighboring teeth by minimizing shift or movement of within the mouth. About caring for your crown - we have seen very few problems arise, but have encountered an occasional porcelain fracture cause by biting hard foods like hard candy and bones. Bad habits like chewing ice can challenge the integrity of a crown. Avoid these behaviors. Without meticulous cleaning, the margin of your crown (where the crown itself meets the surface of the root beneath soft tissue) may be compromised. Floss quite carefully in this area but do not floss. Bacteria are tiny and can invade at the slightest opportunity, don't let them. Continue coming in for regular examinations so we can evaluate the fit of your crown over time. In the meantime, call us with any problems you encounter and we will schedule early.
CORE BUILDUP - HOME CARE
You have a core buildup in your mouth. Be careful about what you eat and chew. The restoration has been placed as a base material that is not designed to last as a final restoration. The purpose of this restoration is to provide a foundation for placement of a final crown and to provide a layer of insulation to protect the nerve of the tooth. Please avoid biting into hard or chewy foods. Brush and floss very gently including sliding the floss out to the side to avoid dislodging the restoration. We recommend that you schedule your crown placement as soon as possible.
