PERIODONTAL DISEASE and HEART ATTACKS
Periodontal pathogens have now been established to have a direct causal link to arteriosclerotic vascular disease (ASVD). Periodontal disease can cause systemic inflammation and can also adversely affect the essential mechanisms in the pathogenesis of ASVD. Hence, dentists are now integral partners with the medical community when it comes to prevention of heart disease, a leading cause of death in our nation. Along with periodontal disease, it has been shown that abscessed teeth and failing endodontic treatments (root canal therapies) can also contribute to ASVD. Recent published studies suggest that up to 50% of all heart attacks may be triggered by an infection in the mouth. Dentists now have the opportunity to not only save people's teeth but to actually help save lives.
